PCOC

The PCOC license is a Canadian Federal government issue card that everyone operating a motorized boat will need to have by Sept 15, 2009. Any boat with any type of motor is classified as a motor boat even if the motor is not operating (ie sailboats under sail, but equipped with a motor).

PCOC stands for Pleasure Craft Operators Card, and today it is required by:

Anyone born after April 1, 1983
Anyone operating a boat under 4 metres (13 feet) in length
Anyone operating a Personal Watercraft

This card must be with you when ever you are operating your boat. It is the same as having your automobile drivers license; if it is at home, then you pay the fine.

Some other restrictions:

If you are under 16 years old, then you can not operate a Personal Water Craft
If you are under 12 years old, then you can not operate a motor boat with an engine over 7.5KW (10 HP), unless accompanied by someone 16 years old or older
If you are 12 -16 years old, then you are limited to motor boats with engines up to 30 KW (40 HP).
